Pure spur of the moment, so I didn't know anything about the area or basically what I could do on the island.
Driving to the island took over 40 minutes but I found it interesting with all of the bridges I had to cross, there is one to left. There was plenty of room at the campground for tents, though not so much for RV's. There was a building with a bathroom and showers and even washer and dryer. There is a kid's playground area that's cute, and a small store with the bare essentials. You might find a coke or a candy bar. The campground itself is the term I do not use lightly "rode hard and left wet". It's clean but looks dated, not exactly the Ritz! For $25 a night I was thinking at least pretty or well maintained.
I'm pretty sure that people are living there. The RV side that is. They have carpets and satellites outside of there RV's. That was a little strange for me. Now the tent side was under some really cool trees, huge trees that blocked all of the wind. So bring a fan or be prepared to sweet all night! Bug spray is a MUST!
From the tent area is pretty bike ride to the beach and a nice boardwalk. This is the part that I enjoyed the most! Takes 5 minutes and your right there on the Gulf.
Pretty beach and worth a look. On the way back, the Locust were out in full force, and I mean they were a cacophony of noise! Rather deafening at times. I settled in for the night. Tossed my tent in the bed of my truck and slept for the most part. It was stifling hot that night and it was hard to sleep until later on in the night when it cooled off. Other guest were noisy but I felt safe the whole night and never worried about getting harassed or serial killers running around.

Would I recommend Dolphin Island. It's worth seeing but not the campground. Also, avoid the BBQ place down the street, just awful. I would have loved this place if I could have slept on the beach.
